FPM memory modules
FastPage Mode is acommon DRAM data-access scheme. Accessing DRAM is similar
to finding information in a book. First, you turn to a particular page,
then you select information from the page. Fast-page mode enables the
CPU to access new data in half the normal access time, as long as it is
on the same page as the previous request. At one time, FPM was the most
common form of DRAM found in computers. FPM DRAM is faster than regular
DRAM, but it still is pretty slow memory, with an access time of 120 ns.
It was tweaked to 60 ns with time, but FPM was still too slow to work
on the 66MHz system bus. For this reason, FPM RAM was replaced by EDO
RAM. FPM RAM is not much used today due to its slow speed, but is almost
universally supported.
