The main difference between SDR (Single Data Rate) and DDR (Double Data Rate) memory is that DDR has double the amount of memory bandwith. This is achieved by transferring data not only at the rising edge of the clock signal but also at the falling edge. DDR also uses a technique called "bursts" to speed up memory transfers. After a read/write command not only one unit of data is transferred, but up to eight. DDR modules, like their SDR SDRAM predecessors, are called DIMMs. They use motherboard designs similar to those used by SDR SDRAM; however, DDR is not backward compatible with SDR SDRAM motherboards. In fact, you can't insert a DDR DIMM into an SDR SDRAM DIMM socket and vice versa. The same goes for DDR and SDR SDRAM SODIMMs. They have different notching and a different number of pins.
